summer solstice full moon

June 20th was the longest day of the year, the summer solstice. The summer solstice hasn't happened in decades. Technically, the summer solstice isn't the entire day. The moment when the earth's northern axis of rotation is most tilted toward the sun. This year it happened at 6:34p.m ET on June 20.

The moon was at its fullest at 7:02a.m ET, putting the two events on the same day. The last time it happened for those in western and central Canada was in 1986, 30 years ago. Atlantic Canada hasn't had it in 1967. That's because the 1986 full moon occurred at 11:42p.m. on June 21 - the day of the solstice - the Toronto, but 12:42a.m. The next day in Halifax, the day after the solstice.

The full moon in June is often called the "strawberry moon". A name believed to originate with Algonquin tribes who used it to mark the start of strawberry season.

The moon becomes full every 29.5 days, or 12 to 13 times a year, but because the moon's cycle doesn't divide evenly into the number of days in our calendar year, the full moon(s) for a given month is shifted about 11 or 12 days per year. It can happen on June 20, 21 or 22. That's because the summer solstice is technically the moment when the earth's northern axis of rotation is most tilted toward the sun, and that happens every 365 1/4 days, and our calendar is just 365 days (with a leap year every four years).

  girls grade 5 soccer tournament

It was a hot sunny June 15, 2016, there was a tremendous grade 5 girl soccer tournament at Earnscliffe senior public school. The girls did so well. Their performance was filled with energy and it looked liked everyone was having so much fun. Dorset had notorious games and won first place. Howson played awesomely and ended up in second place. Folkstone's coach said we are very confident. Lose or Win does not matter we're having fun anyways. For Folkstone, Dorset was the hardest team. They were behind schedule and barely had any half-times -which was had for the girls - but they were really good at saving energy. The teams also were nice to one- another and to the other teams.
Everyone said that their team played astonishingly well. The coaches said that well practicing there teams improved in passing, aiming and having power in they're shots. The referees did a great job. They made sure that everything would be fair. They did make some mistakes, but they are human. They were out-ragingly good. Mr.D was the head of the tournament this year, and it turned out to be a big success.
Every game will be a fight. Every team is good. Excellently executed Folkstone's coaches catch phrase.

The Upcoming Talent Show!

A talent show is an event where participants perform talents of singing, dancing, acrobatics, acting, drumming, martial arts, playing an instrument or other activities to showcase their skills. As you may know, the talent show eventuates near the end of the school year at Earnscliffe. Students will be performing their talents which they chose to perform at the last monthly assembly that will take place on the 20th of June, 2016 this year. Every year at the talent show, parents arrive to see their children perform their talents to the audience. I am certainly excited to see our Eagles perform wickedly because last year was a success! Lets go Eagles!

The Asian Heritage and Perseverance Assembly

The Asian Heritage and Perseverance Assembly

By: Tanraj Dulai

On Friday, June 3, 2016, Earnscliffe Senior Public School held a double assembly to recognize Asian Heritage month, and celebrate their character trait of the month: perseverance. At this assembly, there were 8 amazing performances by Earnscliffe students. There was 1 demonstration by BBASS, 5 Asian heritage performances, and 2 perseverance pieces.

BBASS is a group of grade 8 students that get together to practice turntablism. The students that put on a mind blowing sound performance were Dj Kk, Dj Willis, Dj Siren, Dj Aliyah, Dj Z, Dj Crossbones, Dj Phantom, and Dj Lightspike. They focused on explaining what scratching discs was really about, and hoped to spark the interest of current grade 7 students to join the club for next year.

The Asian heritage month performances included a Tabla (traditional South Asian drum) piece by Anikate, a Bhangra dance using a “sapp” and “khunda” by Jason, a bollywood dance by Marva, Olivia, and Vrinda, and traditional Hindi dance by Preya. To top off the entertainment, students showcased different clothing types from all over Asia.

To display their character trait of the month, perseverance, the students of 8M1 presented a skit that drew on famous quotes that revolved around perseverance. One of the quotes used was by Albert Einstein, “It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” The final performance was a dance number choreographed by Taaliyah and Tyniqua, and it was performed by 7F5 as a class.

Overall, students seemed to enjoy the performances put on by their fellow classmates through vigorous clapping and cheering. The positivity and support that these students show for one another really represents their school spirit and livelihood. Go Eagles go!
